North Callaway snaps skid, captures first win

After 13 games without a win, the North Callaway baseball team picked up a victory last night in the first game of a doubleheader by beating Clopton 7-1. The Thunderbirds then played South Callaway and lost 7-6.

In the victory, North Callaway opened a four-run lead in the first inning and added three more runs in the fourth inning behind a solo home run by Zeth Lavy. Lavy led North Callaway with two hits, an RBI and two runs scored. T.C. Sorell added one hit and two runs scored.

Freshman Grant Cundiff (1-1) pitched five innings, allowed five hits and struck out five Clopton batters to pick up the win for the Thunderbirds. Adam Bencoma took the loss for Clopton (1-10).

In the second game, South Callaway (3-9) collected the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sharp single to right field that nullified the run scored by the Thunderbirds (1-14) in the top of the inning to tie the game.

Kris Stubblefield led North Callaway with two hits - including a double - and two RBI.

North Callaway will play at New Bloomfield at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Harrisburg 16, Madison 0: Tyler Corujo collected three hits - including a double - and four RBI for the Bulldogs (10-2), who hammered Madison (2-9) in five innings.

Josh Taylor went 3 for 3 with three RBI. Freshman Tyler Rasmussen stayed undefeated and won his fourth start by pitching a complete game two-hitter and striking out six.

Smith-Cotton 2, Hickman 1: Katie LaRue’s goal wasn’t enough for the Kewpies (2-14-2), who gave up the winner with three minutes left in the second overtime period.

Smith-Cotton won on a free kick that squirted past the Hickman defense.
