Boehm promotes 3 to rank of sergeant

The Columbia Police Department has promoted three officers to the rank of sergeant in the patrol officer division.

The new sergeants - Candy Cornman, Bruce Houston and Chris Kelley - will work under Capt. Stephen Monticelli, effective April 6.

The creation of three lieutenant positions on Jan. 1 as part of a departmental reorganization created the three vacancies, Police Chief Randy Boehm said. The reorganization is aimed at consolidating patrol divisions under one commander and streamlining the department’s internal affairs procedures.

The police department now has 20 sergeants across all of its divisions, Boehm said.

Cornman, 36, a graduate of Columbia College with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, was hired April 6, 1998, as a narcotics officer after spending five years with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. She became a city patrol officer in April 2000.

Houston, 34, a graduate of the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in political science, was hired June 16, 1997, as a patrol officer.

Kelley, 36, a graduate of Columbia College with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, was hired April 7, 1990, as a community services aide. He became a patrol officer on Jan. 5, 1998.
