THE TRIBUNE'S VIEW
TIF

By HENRY J. WATERS III, Publisher, Columbia Daily Tribune
In approving the use of tax increment financing in the downtown area, the Columbia City Council walks a fine line. Tax increment financing can help redevelop downtown, but over time it is almost certain to be abused.

Let us not be defined by our differences
By JEFFREY R. WILLIAMS
Over the past year and a half, I’ve started to worry about Columbia’s future. I worry we are destined to be defined by our differences rather than by what binds us together.

HOMEBOY
LeMone was larger than life

By DOUG PUGH
When I left off last Sunday, I was smack dab in the middle of reviewing my top 10 favorite childhood restaurants. For those of you hoping to find the continuation of that column, I’m afraid it’s going to have to wait a couple more weeks. Article makes same points as rejected Opinion piece

Editor, the Tribune: On Feb. 7, I submitted what I thought was a very well-written article for the Tribune. Another leading area paper published this article Feb. 6. As it was more than 1,000 words, I asked it to be published on the Opinion page.

Editor, the Tribune: According to the March 5 Tribune, the Supreme Court jester and funny little fascist Tony Scalia offered University of Central Missouri students a constitutional jurisprudence best put by Humpty Dumpty: "When I use a word … it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less."

Keeping all informed simplifies development

Editor, the Tribune: Recently, when the Crosscreek development was brought before the Columbia City Council, it became clear the developers and neighborhood were not working on the same page.

OPEN COLUMN
Senate bill would allow more highway billboards

Editor, the Tribune: Many billboards on the interstates are "nonconforming," meaning they do not comply with current spacing or size regulations. If they should come down, for any reason, they are not allowed to go back up or be relocated.

Election unlikely to ease worries
By CHARLEY REESE
Hillary Clinton’s delicate task is winning the Democratic presidential nomination without alienating the supporters of Barack Obama.

War’s toll on Iraqis neglected
Five years into the Iraq war, much of America’s focus has been on the nearly 4,000 U.S. soldiers who have died, the $600 billion in tax money spent and the projected tab of $3 trillion.
