Kewps advance at tourney

Yvonne Anderson scored 22 points as the second-seeded Hickman girls basketball team defeated Lutheran South 54-24 in the opening round of the Fischer’s Pro-Line Tournament at Webster Groves.

The Kewpies (15-5), ranked seventh in Class 5, used a 24-point second quarter to build a 35-12 halftime advantage over the Class 4 Lancers (4-15)

The big lead allowed Hickman Coach Tonya Mirts to clear her bench early. Nine Kewpies scored, with reserves Nicole Schulz and Indya Shepherd both contributing five points.

Hickman will face third-seeded Jefferson City in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Jamestown 48, Columbia Independent 22: Amy Ashley had 14 points and seven rebounds and Jessi Nivens added 11 points and six rebounds to lead the Eagles (10-6), who outscored CIS 32-14 in the second half.

Brianne Abramovitz scored nine points to lead CIS.
