Hickman girls hang on in fourth quarter

Hickman senior Yvonne Anderson scored 17 points, and the Kewpies girls basketball team barely held on to defeat Springfield Glendale 42-41 last night in Springfield.

Hickman (9-5) led 30-18 at halftime and 40-35 after three quarters before scoring just two points in the final period. Taylor Ford added 10 points for Hickman, which hosts Nerinx Hall today at 4:30 p.m.

Kaley Lyons led Glendale with 16 points.

Harrisburg 41, Russellville 36: The Bulldogs erased a halftime deficit to come back and salvage fifth place in the South Callaway Tournament.

After trailing 20-19 at the break, Harrisburg (4-8) tied Russellville late on a Courtney Jorgenson 3-pointer then took the lead for good on two Jorgenson free throws in the final 30 seconds. Harrisburg clinched the victory at the free-throw line, hitting of 5 of 6 down the stretch.

Hallsville 40, Centralia 32: Samantha Mullings’ game-high 19 points led Hallsville to victory in the third-place game of the Centralia Tournament.

The Indians (10-2) pulled away in the fourth quarter after leading just 20-18 at halftime as Mullings was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line in the final period. Mallory Henry led Centralia (8-5) with 13 points.

Hallsville returns to action at 6 tonight at home against Mark Twain, the No. 8 team in Class 3.

Salisbury 62, Fayette 48: Catherine Kelly scored a game-high 26 points, but the Falcons couldn’t stop Salisbury.

Tori Eaton added 13 for the Falcons (5-7, 2-2 Lewis and Clark Conference). Kathy Nicolav led Salisbury (9-3, 3-0) with 22 points, while Morgan Vetter scored 17 and Allison Monning added 14.

Fayette opens play in the Macon Tournament on Tuesday.

Boys basketball

Hallsville 52, Centralia 39: Blake Berkbuegler scored all of his game-high 16 points in the second half as the Indians (8-4) took over in the second half to win the championship game of the Centralia Tournament.

Berkbuegler scored 14 of Hallsville’s 20 points in the third quarter while the Indians held Centralia to 10 points in the quarter. Hallsville prevailed despite making just 8 of 18 free throws.

Jardyn Angell led Centralia with 11 points.

Fayette 45, Salisbury 42: Xavien Crump scored a put-back layup with 45 seconds remaining to give the Falcons a one-point lead it wouldn’t relinquish in a Lewis and Clark Conference game in Salisbury.

Crump’s basket, which scored the final two of his 20 points, came after Matt Koenig made a 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining to give Salisbury its first lead of the game, 42-41.

Crump also finished with 13 rebounds and Ryan Sherman added 12 points for Fayette (6-6, 4-0).

Shane Kressig led Salisbury with 12 points. Fayette begins play in the Macon Tournament on Tuesday against South Shelby.

Women’s basketball

Stephens 75, Alverno 68: Ali Roper made 6 of 12 shots from 3-point range to score 21 points and lead the Stars to their fifth straight win in Milwaukee.

Tia Lafavor added 19 points for Stephens (6-7), and Ashley Johnson scored 15. Kerri Shanks led the Stars with seven rebounds. Ambrial Miller scored 19 for Alverno.

Stephens will play St. Mary’s on Monday in Leavenworth, Kan., and host Central Bible on Tuesday.
