Bruins, Kewpies take
first step at districts
Published Saturday, February 9, 2008
Rock Bridge advanced three wrestlers into today’s semifinals and Hickman advanced two during the first day of competition in the Class 4 District 3 Tournament at Jefferson City’s Fleming Fieldhouse. Will Evans, Taylor Crane and Kyle Lewis lived up to their seeds for the Bruins. Evans, seeded first in the 103-pound division, won his only match to advance to the semis. Crane, seeded second at 140, won two matches, and Lewis, the second seed at 145, won his only match of the evening. Rock Bridge’s five remaining wrestlers are still in contention to advance to next week’s state tournament but losses dropped them into wrestlebacks. Senior Charlie Lay, a state qualifier last year, did not wrestle because of a concussion he suffered last week. Hickman’s Vince Pescaglia and Drae Cox remained undefeated with comfortable victories. Pescaglia (21-0) won his only 112-pound match by fall, and Cox (41-0) won his lone match at 152 by technical fall. Pescaglia is seeded first and Cox second. Richard Kennedy picked up Hickman’s only other win but dropped his 189-pound quarterfinal to fall into wrestlebacks. Action resumes at 10 a.m. today, with first- and third-place matches scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m.
