Manholes subject to sewer inspection

A private engineering firm will begin inspecting sewer manholes in central Columbia this week.

Steve Hunt, the city’s sewer engineer, said TREKK Design Group of Kansas City tomorrow would begin inspecting the condition of the sewer access points and whether water is entering them from the street. Excess water entering manholes could lead to sewer overflows, he said.

The work will continue through June 30 and will involve inspecting about 3,000 of Columbia’s 16,000 manholes in an area bounded by Stadium Boulevard, Business Loop 70 and Providence Road.

The city will spend $225,000 on the inspections, Hunt said.
