Bundy leads Kewps to OT win by throwing in 29 after the half

Hickman’s Byron Bundy picked up two early fouls last night at Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis and watched most of the first half from the bench. He made up for lost time, though, scoring all of his 29 points in the second half and in overtime as the Kewpies came back to win 67-58.

Hickman (14-11) trailed 42-32 heading into the fourth quarter, but Bundy exploded with 17 points in the quarter to force overtime. The Kewpies outscored the Wildcats 12-3 in overtime and snapped Westminster’s five-game winning streak. It was just the second home loss of the season for Westminster (20-6), the No. 8 team in Class 4.

Josh Elam added 11 points for Hickman, which next plays Tuesday against Smith-Cotton in the Class 5 District 10 Tournament at Helias.

Sean Duff led Westminster with 17 points, while Garen Lafser added 16.

St. Charles Christian 44, Christian Fellowship 43: In Joplin, Joe Cherri’s put-back beat the final buzzer and would have given Christian Fellowship a victory in the first round of the Missouri Christian Schools Athletic Association state tournament. Instead, a foul on the floor was called before the shot was released, waving off the apparent game-winning basket. The officials put 1.2 seconds back on the clock, but Zach Clark’s jumper rimmed out.

The Knights (10-8) move to the consolation bracket and will play Life Christian today.

Justin Miller led Christian Fellowship with 18 points, while Cherri added 15. Ryan Kessler led St. Charles Christian with 14 points but missed the front end of a 1-on-1 with 20 seconds left, setting up the Knights’ final possession. Miller missed a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left, but Cherri corralled the rebound and put up a shot - only to have it waved off by the foul. Cherri made a 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds to cut St. Charles Christian’s lead to one.

Moberly 62, Mexico 35: Eric Saunders scored 13 points and Brian Williams and Brennan Hughes scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the Spartans cruised to a road win.

Stephen Thoenen led Mexico (1-17) with 14 points.

Both teams start play in the Class 4 District 8 Tournament on Monday at Moberly Area Community College.

Westran 64, Community R-VI 53: Westran (9-11) got 27 points and 16 rebounds from Roscoe Robinson. Brandon Messer added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who play at Fayette tonight. Matt Weinberg led Community with 18 points.

Westran 61, Community R-VI 47: Community closed the gap in the third quarter after falling behind by 20 at halftime, but Westran was too strong in the fourth quarter. Becca Schemmer led the Hornets (19-1, 7-0 Lewis and Clark Conference) with 27 points, while Kayla Rice scored 23 and had six assists. Westran plays tonight at Fayette.
