Douglass overwhelms Jamestown
Smith, Boone lead Bulldogs to lopsided win.

There was little doubt after the first quarter who the better team was last night when Douglass and Jamestown hooked up at Southwell Complex. The Bulldogs went up 30-9 after the first quarter on their way to a 78-33 win.

"Sometimes it is really hard to play well when you have a team overmatched, and we had them overmatched," Douglass Coach Lynn Allen said. "We just played really good team basketball. It looked like the kids were having a lot of fun out there, and they had a lot of energy. It was just one of those nights where everything went our way and everybody got to play."

Landon Boone and Cameron Smith helped Douglass (14-6) get the big lead as they each scored 12 points in the first quarter. Smith was the game’s leading scorer with 25 points, and Boone added 19.

"I just played calmed down and relaxed," Smith said. "I shot set shots with my shoulders square to the basket. That is what my coach told me to do, and it worked."

"He is starting to do more," Allen said. "He is learning to use his quickness, which is his biggest asset. He is just starting to play like we have expected him to play all year."

Jamestown dropped to 1-20.

The Bulldogs’ biggest advantage came on the glass. Jamestown’s tallest player, Jordan Folkman, who led the team with 18 points, spent most of his time on the perimeter. That opened up the lane for Douglass. The Bulldogs frequently got as many as four or five offensive rebounds before they scored.

Anthony Massengale has played a big role in the team’s improved rebounding. The 6-foot-5 swingman played in just his 10th game of the year after moving back to Columbia from Indiana. He finished with 10 points.

"He is a really athletic player and he is finally getting into the swing of things," Allen said. "We still want him to be more of an enforcer on defense, where he stays on the floor a little more and stays out of foul trouble."
