Hickman girls gut out win
Swarming defensive pressure keeps taller Markers in check.

The Hickman girls basketball team used a swarming defense against a taller team to gut out a 42-36 victory over Nerinx Hall yesterday in Webster Groves.

Yvonne Anderson led the Kewpies - 23-1 and ranked second in Class 5 - with 14 points and combined with Shana White to shut down the Markers (17-6). The two Hickman players repeatedly got their hands on Nerinx Hall passes, and, despite going scoreless, the 5-foot-10 White also helped hold the 6-1 Hayley Pieper and 6-foot Molly Wersching relatively in check. Anderson, meanwhile, added five steals to her game-high point total.

Pieper finished with 12 points to lead the Markers.

Lauren Nolke added 12 for the Kewpies, who next play Friday, when they host Jackson.

Centralia 61, Louisiana 22: The Panthers raced to a 42-9 halftime lead and were never challenged Friday in Clarence Cannon Conference action.

Shelly Rosenfelder scored 19 points to lead Centralia (11-11, 3-2). Felicia McCann added 11 points and Mallory Henry and Erin Van Maanen both scored eight.
