STREET TALK
Another El Maguey to open near Broadway Wal-Mart

Vitamins, video games and an El Maguey Mexican restaurant highlight the latest batch of leases scored by Maly Commercial Realty Inc., leasing agent for the two recently opened Wal-Mart Supercenters.

El Maguey Mexican restaurant owner Manuel De La Paz said he plans to open a restaurant at the Wal-Mart Supercenter complex off West Broadway and Fairview Road in about four months.

The upcoming restaurant will be the fourth local El Maguey opened by De La Paz, who launched his first restaurant in 1994 at 504 Business Loop 70 W. Other locations followed in the Broadway Marketplace at 21 Conley Road and in the Nifong Commercial Building at 901 E. Nifong Blvd.

Also at the Fairview Supercenter complex is EyeMart Express. The company operates a chain of Midwest eyewear stores.

Meanwhile, over at the Grindstone Parkway Supercenter, GNC - which stands for General Nutrition Center - plans to open an outlet in one of the adjoining rental spaces. The Pittsburgh-based retailer of nutritional supplements has locations at the Columbia Mall and in the nearby Rock Bridge Shopping Center. The company, founded in 1935 by David Shakarian, has more than 5,000 outlets throughout North America.

A spokeswoman with GNC could not be reached for comment.

A GameStop video game store is planned next door to GNC. The Grapevine, Texas-based company has 4,400 worldwide stores that offer new and used video games, supplies and publications. An affiliate store, EB Games, is at the Columbia Mall. Phone calls to the retailer were not returned.

Three previously reported lease deals at Grindstone are Cingular Wireless, Taco Bueno and a Fuddruckers.

The 183,000-square-foot Supercenter along Grindstone Parkway anchors the St. Louis-based THF Realty Inc. development, but the complex includes 153,556 square feet of potential rental space, according to plans at the city’s office of protective inspection. There is about 30,000 square feet of rental space adjoining Wal-Mart and two separate buildings within the development that have about 20,000 square feet each. Plans call for up to five more buildings with about 20,000 square feet each.

ON THE MOVE

Powder Horn Guns & Sporting Goods, 1213 Old 63, will move next month to a 5,300-square-foot leasehold in the former Sutherland Lumber building under renovation at 1915 Paris Road, owner Lee Brandkamp said.

The store opened in 1983 in a 700-square-foot spot off Paris Road and has been at the current site since 1989.

The new site is about 50 percent larger and gives more space for inventory and a larger indoor archery range for customers to tune and set up their gear and for clubs and groups such as 4-H and Scouts, Brandkamp said.

"Those groups need a place to get together and shoot when the weather’s not great," he said.

In October, a local investment group bought the Sutherland property, which had been vacant for about 10 years. A planned 7,200-square-foot building at the 2.5-acre site is slated to house the local Fastenal construction supply store now located at 3324 Brown Station Road, and another 6,000-square-foot building also is planned for the complex.

SWEET DEAL

A Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop plans to open at 2709 E. Broadway next to the Break Time in The Broadway Shops complex in a site previously occupied by The Scoop Frozen Custard Shoppe, according to plans filed at the city’s Office of Protective Inspections.

Franchise owner Jeff Offutt did not return phone calls seeking comment.

The Scoop owners Randy and Cindy Minchew moved their custard and deli shop to the location in late 2005 from The Village of Cherry Hill but closed down a few months later.

Offutt, who is one of the largest Subway sandwich shop franchise owners in Missouri, recently opened outlets inside the new Wal-Mart Supercenters. About two years ago, Offutt opened a Baskin-Robbins outlet inside his Subway sandwich shop at Ninth and Cherry streets.

SPRINGING INTO ACTION

Ground breaking is under way on Boulder Springs, a 70-unit luxury condominium development off Campus View Drive overlooking the Hinkson Creek valley, listing agent John John of ReMax/Boone Realty said.

John said the development is a project of Mills Properties, an apartment and condominium group based in St. Louis known for unique landscaping. The grounds of the sprouting condo development will feature lakes, fountains and waterfalls and provide access to the nearby city and university trail systems, he said.

Construction is set to start in March, and units should be ready for sale about three months later, John said. Condo units are expected to start at $250,000, he said.

GIVE ME LAND, LOTS OF LAND

Farmer John Sam Williamson is asking $3 million for 176 acres off Route K south of The Cascades residential subdivision, according to a recent listing with Larry Oetting of ReMax/Boone Realty, who could not be reached for comment.

The land is amid a bundle of parcels totaling about 1,300 acres that have recently been snatched up by local developer Jose Lindner, whose local commercial properties include Forum Shopping Center, Nifong Shopping Center and The Broadway Shops.

LA UPDATE

After a Tribune story last week about the sale and upcoming demolition of the Campus Inn at 1112 Stadium Blvd., readers wanted to know where the attached La Tolteca Mexican Restaurant would go.

Owner Carlos Hernandez said he’s not sure yet. He said he has until the end of this month to vacate and is looking for a new spot to lease. Hernandez also said he’s looking for a site to launch another restaurant in town called Mi Tolteca.
