Hickman girls easily advance to tourney final

Hickman’s Chastity Prince scored all 12 of her points by draining four 3-pointers in the first half as the Kewpies got out of the gate fast against St. Joseph’s Academy in the semifinals of the Ameritime Tournament at Maryville University in St. Louis. Even with leading scorer Yvonne Anderson fouling out early in the fourth quarter, the second-ranked Kewpies defeated the perennial St. Louis powerhouse 55-36. "It was really a game of two halves,’’ Kewpies Coach Tonya Mirts said. "Prince hit all four 3s in the first half and popped open the zone. And after Yvonne Anderson fouled out with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, her teammates stepped up." Lauren Nolke scored 14 points for Hickman (19-1) to lead all scorers, followed by Anderson with 13 and Prince with 12. Hickman will face Metro in the championship game at 7:30 tomorrow night. Metro defeated Jefferson City 60-38 in the other semifinal. ● North Callaway 70, Linn 31: The Thunderbirds cruised to a 37-17 halftime lead at the Southern Boone Classic and never let up. Samantha Heck led North Callaway (12-6) with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Laura Love added a career-high 18 points. Jennifer Lubbers came off the bench to score 10 for the Thunderbirds, who continue play in the consolation finals at 5 tonight against Fatima. Mandi Scheulen led Linn (1-12) with nine points. ● CFS 46, Patriettes 44: Alex Greenwood led Christian Fellowship with 17 points in the first round of the Life Tournament at Jefferson High School in St. Louis. Amanda Caldwell added 13 points for the Knights (5-8). Boys basketball ● CFS 64, North County Christian 61: In the first round of the Life Tournament in St. Louis, Christian Fellowship erased a five-point deficit in the final minute with an 8-0 run. Trailing 61-56 with a minute to play on North County’s home court, the Knights cut the lead to two with a three-point play by Justin Miller then tied it with two Joe Cherri free throws. Miller knocked away the ensuing inbounds pass, and after a timeout, Cherri broke the tie with a game-winning 3-pointer with eight seconds left. North County couldn’t answer on the other end. The Knights (9-5) were led by Miller’s 22 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Cherri added 21 points, while Wilson Sundvold had 17, including 14 in the first half. Christian Fellowship plays in the second round at 6:30 tonight. ● Fatima 71, North Callaway 43: The Thunderbirds fell behind early at the Southern Boone Classic and never recovered. Fatima (9-7), led by Greg Stegeman’s game-high 16 points, led 29-19 at halftime. Kevin Kleindeinst led North Callaway (1-16) with 12 points. The Thunderbirds next play Tuesday at home against Hallsville. ● New Franklin 65, Jamestown 43: Ryan Tucker scored 30 points to lead New Franklin (5-11). Jordan Folkman scored 31 for Jamestown.
Prep wrestling ● Hickman 44, Truman 23: In Independence, the Kewpies wrapped up the regular season with a victory, improving their record in duals to 8-1. Scoring pins for the Kewpies were 119-pounder Jacob Thornton, Ross Reynolds (130), Jordan Lanham (145) and Drae Cox (152). Also victorious for Hickman by technical falls were Vince Pescaglia (112) and K.C. Pescaglia (125), while Michael Sivley (135), Will Brumit (140) and Spencer McGowan (285) all won by decisions. The Kewpies next compete in the Class 4 District 3 Tournament next weekend in Jefferson City.
Women’s basketball ● Westminster 73, Webster 66: The Blue Jays (5-13, 3-8 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) broke a five-game conference losing streak in St. Louis. Heather Collums scored 15 points, Whitney Meurer had 13, Brittney Scott added 11 and Markie England finished with 10. Jacuelyn Wamser finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds for Webster (5-14, 5-7). ● Lindenwood 64, CMU 40: Trisha Lyons led Central Methodist (4-17, 2-13 Heart of America Athletic Conference) with 11 points in Fayette. Ryanne Morton led Lindenwood (8-13, 5-9) with 16 points.
Men’s basketball ● CMU 74, Lindenwood 58: Matt Sherman made 6 of 10 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead the Eagles (13-11, 7-8 HAAC) with 20 points in Fayette. Derek Moore and Shane Ringen scored 12 each. Earnie Norman led Lindenwood (13-11, 7-7) with 18 points. ● Webster 86, Westminster 73: Webster snapped a 52-52 tie and pulled away midway through the second half in St. Louis. Westminster (10-7, 6-5 SLIAC) was led by Robert David with 16 points, Landon Kurz with 14 and Kurt Kuschel with 12. Darin Hoggatt scored 28 points for league-leading Webster (11-8, 9-3).
