Gunfire at home prompts teen arrest
Published Sunday, December 23, 2007
A dispute between a teenage girl and her mother erupted in gunfire as the girl allegedly fired a handgun at their central Columbia residence yesterday. Police arrested Deshai L. Richardson, 16, on suspicion of first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. She also was arrested on suspicion of property damage and domestic assault. At about 3:50 p.m., Columbia police said in a news release, officers were dispatched to a disturbance with a weapon on the 600 block of Spencer Avenue. Officers found that Richardson had an argument with her mother and that Richardson allegedly kicked a car door before firing a handgun at the house, which was occupied at the time by two adults and a 6-year-old family member. The bullet fired into the home penetrated a wall and passed through the arm of a coat worn by a man in the house. No one was injured, police said. Officers seized a .25-caliber handgun at the residence.
