Bruins hand host Myrtle Beach first defeat, reach semis

The Rock Bridge girls basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Crescent Bank Holiday Invitational yesterday in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with a 56-45 win over previously unbeaten Myrtle Beach.

The Bruins (8-2) made 20 of 26 free throws to help them hold on for the win. Katherine Harry made all 10 of her free-throw attempts to finish with a team-high 16 points. The 6-foot-3 junior also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Claire Schaeperkoetter totaled 14 points and six assists, and Amaya Williams and Kelsey Eckenrode both added nine points.

Schaeperkoetter, Williams and Eckenrode all made two 3-pointers.

Leading 25-18 at halftime, Rock Bridge quickly built a double-digit lead early in the second half. Myrtle Beach (9-1) never got closer than eight points after that.

Rock Bridge, ranked ninth in Class 5, plays Winter Haven, Fla., tonight. The Devils (14-1) are ranked 10th in the nation by USA Today and feature two Division I recruits.

Hickman 66, Oak Park 34: Yvonne Anderson scored 27 points and Chasity Prince added 15 as the fifth-ranked Kewpies won easily in Kansas City.

Hickman (5-2) didn’t allow any Oak Park players in double figures and turned the game into a blowout by winning the third quarter 21-7.

The Kewpies begin play in the KTXR Lady Classic Thursday at Drury University in Springfield.

Boonville 67, Eldon 48: Kaitlyn Bowles led the way for the Pirates with 17 points.

Heather English added 14 points and Jessica Klusmeyer had 12 for Boonville (8-1).

Mazy Dowdy led Eldon (4-6) with 13 points.

Boys basketball

Oak Park 58, Hickman 42: The Kewpies failed to get a single player in double figures as they dropped their fourth game in a row.

Hickman trailed 24-20 at halftime, but Oak Park expanded its to 11 after outscoring the Kewpies 13-6 in the third quarter.

Junior Eric Franklin and freshman TC Carter were the high scorers for Hickman (2-6) with eight points apiece.

Don Martin led Oak Park (6-0) with 18 points, while James Robinson contributed 14 points.

Eldon 70, Boonville 65: Tory Hurt scored 21 points and Martez Callaway added 16 for the Pirates (1-5) in defeat.

Higbee 53, Bucklin 29: Phil Starks totaled 13 points and 25 rebounds to lead the Tigers (4-2) to victory.

Shawn Glen added 16 points for Higbee.

Hannibal 30, Mexico 29 (2 OT): Tied at 19 at the end of regulation and at 25 after the first overtime, the Pirates outscored the Bulldogs in the second overtime to secure the road victory.

Randle Mosley led Hannibal (1-8) with 16 points.

Kurt Loyd and Alex Gardner were the high scorers for Mexico (3-5) with eight points each.
