Larry McCray, 1937-2007

Larry Lee McCray, 70, of Columbia passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at his home. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Parker Funeral Service. Larry was born Aug. 27, 1937, in Columbia to Leland and the late Doris Smith McCray. He married Dolores Holmes of Hatton on Aug. 31, 1956, and she survives. He graduated from Fulton High School and attended the University of Missouri. He was a former member of the Missouri National Guard. At 14, he began working for Wise Bros. Farms in Callaway County. He spent a few years in construction with his father. He then worked in pork production before joining the Boone County Sheriff’s Department in 1976, retiring in 1999 as a captain. He was a lifetime member of the Missouri Deputy Sheriffs Association, Post 594 of the Elks Club, Vintage Green Two-Cylinder Club, Missouri Cattleman’s Association, and former board of education member of New Haven Elementary School. Larry will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years; his father, Leland McCray; sons, Steven McCray and wife Becky, Ronald McCray and wife Janis, all of Columbia; five grandchildren, Austin McCray, Anthony McCray, Amanda Carroll, Randi Hancock, Jacob Houg; five great-grandchildren; numerous relatives; and many friends. Contributions may be made to Missouri River Hospice, Coyote Hills Children’s Home, Voluntary Action Center or Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Hatton.
