NOTEWORTHY

Meet the Nebraska Cornhuskers

● Founded in 1869, the University of Nebraska began playing football in 1890 and became a charter member of the Missouri Valley Conference, then joined the Big Six Conference, which later evolved into the Big 12.

● Before they were Cornhuskers, Nebraska players were known as Treeplanters, Rattlesnake Boys, Antelopes and Bugeaters. Lincoln Journal sportswriter Charles Sherman is credited with creating the nickname Cornhuskers in 1900.

● Notable Nebraska alums in the NFL include LB Demorrio Williams (Falcons), P Sam Koch (Ravens), DE Chris Kelsay (Bills), S Mike Minter (Panthers), DE Mike Rucker (Panthers), P Kyle Larson (Bengals), C Dominic Raiola (Lions), RB Ahman Green (Packers), PK Kris Brown (Texans), OL Zach Weigert (Texans), OL Will Shields (Chiefs), C Russ Hochstein (Patriots), S Josh Bullocks (Saints), LB Scott Shanle (Saints), CB Fabian Washington (Raiders), RB Correll Buckhalter (Eagles), PK Josh Brown (Seahawks), DE Grant Wistrom (Seahawks) and DE Klye Vanden Bosch (Titans).

● Famous Nebraska alums include Johnny Carson, Warren Buffett and novelist Willa Cather.

● Nebraska is just one of three teams in the nation to rank in the top 25 in rushing offense, passing offense, total offense and scoring offense. Louisville and Oregon are the others.

● Nebraska recently joined Michigan, Notre Dame and Texas in the 800-victory club, winning its 800th game on Oct. 14 at Kansas State. The Oct. 21 Texas-Nebraska game was just the third ever between two 800-win programs. Michigan and Notre Dame played the others last season and this season.
