Not long ago I was driving home by way of Interstate 70 through St. Louis. It was a Friday afternoon well before "rush" hour, closer to 3 than 5 p.m. I was using the northern loop, complete with its own bridges across the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, avoiding the mainline I-70 route.

Editor, the Tribune: Cooler heads need to speak up on immigration. Nobody seems to be giving any thought to unintended consequences.

Immigration fix opposition is mystifying

Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican from Nebraska, says the National Guard is not the right outfit to back up the Border Patrol on the Mexican border. So my question is a simple one: The organization is called the National Guard, is it not? Aren’t they supposed to guard us if need be?
