Missouri relievers selected
Parker, Wendte chosen on Day 2 of MLB draft.

The National League Central turned to Missouri for some relief yesterday.

Tigers senior relievers Taylor Parker and Travis Wendte were selected yesterday on Day 2 of Major League Baseball’s first-year player draft.

Parker, a left-hander, was taken in the 21st round by the Chicago Cubs. Wendte, a right-hander, was a 24th-round selection of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Six Missouri players were chosen over the two days of the draft, which is a school record. The two seniors join four juniors selected yesterday. Right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer was taken in the first round by Arizona; left-handed pitcher Nathan Culp went in the fourth round to San Diego; relief pitcher Brett Reynolds was chosen by Arizona in the 17th round; and outfielder Hunter Mense was a 17th round selection by Florida.

Parker - a 5-foot-10, 140-pound hurler from Bellaire, Texas - has been a versatile pitcher for Missouri Coach Tim Jamieson, who could use the crafty left-hander in a variety of situations. This season, Parker started twice and picked up five saves. He went 4-4 with a 3.19 ERA. Parker allowed no earned runs in picking up two wins over the weekend at the Malibu, Calif., Regional, including a career-long 52/3-inning victory in the final against Pepperdine.

Wendte - a 6-2, 194-pound right-hander from Moore, Okla. - went 2-2 with two saves and a team-leading 1.53 ERA in 34 appearances this season and was named to the All-Big 12 honorable-mention team. Wendte was a freshman All-American as a closer in 2002. He missed the end of the 2003 season and all of 2004 with a rotator cuff injury.
