Katelynn Veach, 5, reaches for a pencil next to John, left, and Paul Gillis as they apply for a summer reading program yesterday at the Columbia Public Library. “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales,” which began yesterday, encourages children ages 2 to 12 to read at least 18 hours over the summer as well as take part in 12 library activities. Participants can sign up at later dates for the summerlong program, which drew 2,234 participants last year.
