Man charged in small-town gunfire spree
Published Saturday, June 3, 2006
A St. Peters man has been charged in connection with a Montgomery City shooting spree yesterday that left a woman dead and a police officer and another man wounded.
The shootings occurred just after midnight, Montgomery City Police Chief P.L. Ahern said. The suspect, Bryan Tullock, 32, was captured nearly six hours later in rural Montgomery County. Tullock was charged yesterday with first-degree murder in the death of Heidi L. Casagrand of Montgomery City. Prosecuting Attorney Kelly Broniec also charged Tullock with two counts of first-degree assault on a Montgomery City police officer, two counts of first-degree assault on Ricky Fry of Montgomery City, first-degree burglary and five counts of armed criminal action. Tullock was being treated last night at Audrain Medical Center, apparently after suffering a medical emergency when he was initially taken to the Montgomery City Jail. After his hospital release, Broniec said in a prepared statement, Tullock was to be held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail. Tullock had been acquainted with both Casagrand and Fry, Montgomery City police said. The episode began at 12:05 a.m. yesterday, when two Montgomery City police officers pulled over Tullock’s white Cadillac after the vehicle allegedly ran a stop sign. As one of the officers approached the car, Ahern said, the driver began firing at the officer with a 9 mm pistol. The officer was struck four times, the bullets striking his bulletproof vest. The second officer returned fire, hitting the Cadillac, and the gunman fled in the car. After driving to a mobile home in Montgomery City, police said, Tullock allegedly kicked in a door and fatally shot Casagrand, 32, who lived there. Police said Tullock then drove off and allegedly shot Fry, 33, who had been walking along the street. Fry suffered several gunshot wounds and was being treated last night at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. Montgomery City police, joined by officers from three area law enforcement agencies, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri Department of Conservation then began an intensive manhunt. At about 5:45 a.m. yesterday, Tullock was arrested in rural Montgomery County. The injured officer was being treated last night at University Hospital.
