Steelman says she won’t run against Gov. Blunt in 2008

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, growing weary of speculation, says she has no plans to run against fellow Republican Gov. Matt Blunt in 2008.

Steelman’s brief comments about her political future were reported yesterday in a front-page article in her hometown newspaper, The Rolla Daily News.

Asked if she plans to run against Blunt in 2008, Steelman said: "No, I am not planning on doing that."

Steelman had refused to rule out a 2008 gubernatorial bid.

Helping fuel speculation was the fact that her campaign committee lists her position sought in 2008 as a generic "statewide office," instead of specifically state treasurer.

The first-term incumbent said she frequently has been asked about her political plans.

"It is becoming more of a distraction every day," Steelman told the Daily News.

Blunt, who like Steelman took office in January 2005, also remains uncommitted for the 2008 elections. The governor told The Associated Press on Friday that he has not decided whether he will seek re-election.

Told of Steelman’s statement yesterday, Blunt said: "Obviously, that would be encouraging."
